Global Warming

81% of all waste is buried in the UK and only 12% was recycled in 2002.

There are over 150,000 ostomates in the UK alone and another 34,000 new stomas formed each year in the UK. This figure is set to rise as people are living longer. This may be due to better surgical techniques, more sophisticated drugs, a better understanding of the disease process, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and advances in the screening process.

Consequently, each year there are over 36½ million used stoma appliances thrown away in landfill sites in the UK

Climate change will affect people everywhere. Changes in the last 50 years include:

Droughts, floods, storms, heat waves, crop losses, melting ice caps and an increase in skin cancers to name a few.

Global Warming

Both the stoma pouch, its contents and the landfill site itself, emit methane gas which in turn contributes to global warming.

Methane gas is still being produced up to 50 years after the landfill site has stopped being used.
