The Facts About Disposability

Until now, there have been three ways generally recommended by stoma care nurses to dispose of a stoma pouch:

Wrap the whole of the soiled stoma pouch up and dispose of it in a refuse bag for waste disposal

Cut the bottom off the soiled pouch and empty the contents down the toilet then wrap the pouch for waste disposal

Or wear a drainable pouch

Recent studies demonstrate that stoma nurses in the UK are generally recommending ostomates to cut the bottom off their pouch and squeeze out the contents before putting the soiled pouch into a bin. This has many public health implications and may contribute to psychological issues for many ostomates.

Most of these stoma pouches will end up on a landfill site
