Health Risks
Once the landfill sites have been discontinued the land is generally utilised for building new homes. However, even after 10 years, stoma pouches are still in the process of biodegrading. It can take some plastics up to 450 years to biodegrade. Consequently, a stoma pouch can still be dug up many years later, causing a health hazard to those working on the site.
Faecal contamination from the pouches to the builders and people living nearby can include:
| Hepatitis A, B or C
| | Spores
| | A number of pathogenic organisms and other infectious diseases
| | Worm infestations
